Controlling Thyroid Disease With CBD, Is It Possible?

Thyroid Disease and CBD
Written by Dr. Leah Zachar

Suffering from thyroid overactivity or underactivity? Learn how can CBD help you to mollify many of the symptoms of thyroid dysfunction and control Thyroid Disease.

Before understanding the connection between Thyroid Disease and CBD, let’s look at the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is located in front of the neck, just below the voice box. The thyroid releases the hormones thyroxine (T4) & triiodothyronine (T3) which controls the body’s metabolism.
The responsibilities of the thyroid gland includes regulation of the one’s mood, metabolism, and mental “equilibrium”.

In the Western world, the most common cause of thyroid disease is autoimmune.  Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disorder resulting in excessive amounts of thyroid hormones.  Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, also an autoimmune disorder, is when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormone.

Excess thyroid hormone causes symptoms such as restlessness, insomnia, nervousness, and muscle weakness.  Deficient thyroid hormone causes symptoms such as tiredness, heavy menstrual bleeding, and hair loss.  Both over and underproduction of hormone can result in mood swings, anxiety, and depression.

There is a large endocannabinoid system located in the thyroid gland.  As a result of this, many of the symptoms of thyroid dysfunction, whether due to thyroid overactivity or underactivity can be controlled with CBD. CBD helps to mollify many of the symptoms of thyroid dysfunction because by directly working inside the thyroid gland, where it balances the anandamide level. When there is homeostasis of the anandamide produced inside the thyroid gland, then both mental and physical balance is achieved.
