The Benefits of Microdosing with Cannabidiol (CBD)

Written by Alexandra Hicks

When it comes to CBD – as with many other medicines and supplements – less is often more. CBD users typically find that they can alleviate their symptoms and diminish negative side effects by taking extra small doses.

Although CBD is essentially a ‘miracle medication’, the correct amount needs to be taken for the effects to work fully. Too little and you end up not treating whatever the symptom is; too much and it could lead to some adverse side effects such as headaches and lethargy. Furthermore, since the cannabinoid levels in the body vary from person to person, there’s no standard dose for any particular weight or medical condition.

It’s always best to take the smallest doses possible not only to keep your tolerance low, but it also helps save product, which in turn saves money. The most common and practical technique for figuring out that perfect number is microdosing. As the name indicates, CBD microdosing is a method in which users take extremely small amounts of cannabidiol regularly, until they achieve the desired level of symptom management. Some people also microdose to regulate their moods, enhance their creativity, promote relaxation, and elevate their workout sessions.

The medical world is starting to take note as well. Dr. Dustin Sulak, the Medical Director of clinics in New England, uses cannabidiol to treat nearly 20,000 patients. He recently discovered that a good portion of his patients do better on lower doses of CBD.

“When I started my practice, I was surprised to see that some patients were using very low dosages (e.g. 1 puff), while other patients require much higher dosages (e.g. 1 joint or a potent edible) to achieve optimal benefits,” Dr. Sulak mentions. “Over time, I began to notice that most patients using small amounts of cannabis were getting better and more sustainable results than their high-dosage counterparts with similar conditions. Eventually I discovered that most people have a certain threshold dosage of cannabis, below which they’ll actually experience a gradual increase in health benefits over time, and above which they’ll start building tolerance, experiencing diminishing benefits, and more side effects.”

Dr. Sulak uses a technique that he refers to as sensitization protocol to help patients reset their endocannabinoid system to decrease their tolerance. After about 1 week, nearly 90 percent of patients can lower their regular dose to 5mg or less.
